The name “The Abominable Bride” comes from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, albeit from a passing reference by Holmes in The Adventure Of The Musgrave Ritual, in which he is looking through old case files and says: “Here’s the record of the Tarleton murders and the case of Vamberry, the wine merchant, and the adventure of the old Russian woman, and the singular affair of the aluminium crutch, as well as a full account of Ricoletti of the club foot and his abominable wife.”

    2

John Watson is depicted as having been wounded in Afghanistan. This, according to the original Sherlock Holmes stories, was in the Second Anglo–Afghan War, fought between the United Kingdom and the Emirate of Afghanistan from 1878 to 1880. This war was part of an ongoing series of conflicts between the United Kingdom and the Russian Empire, competing for dominance of Asia. This tussle between superpowers became known as the Great Game, which was also the name given to the first episode of the modern Sherlock in which we meet Jim Moriarty.

    3
(The Strand Magazine)

Doyle’s Christmas-set fowl-themed story, The Adventure Of The Blue Carbuncle, referenced here as Watson’s latest Sherlock Holmes story was indeed published in The Strand magazine in 1892.

    4
221B (221B Baker Street)

In the space usually occupied by a bison skull (in front of which Mary was memorably framed in The Sign Of Three, giving the illusion that she had devil horns) in the modern 221B is this stag head. An ear trumpet stands in for the headphones usually adorning the bison skull.

In Doyle’s introduction to The Memoirs Of Sherlock Holmes, he describes the way Sherlock keeps “his unread letters on the mantel, impaled with a jackknife.”

In that same introduction, Doyle noted how Holmes “stored his pipe tobacco in the toe of a Persian slipper.” In the modern Sherlock, the pipe tobacco has turned into cigarettes, but here it’s in the original form.

The painting of a skull that hangs on the wall of the modern 221B Baker Street has been replaced by a Victorian image of a lady at her toilet, which, when viewed from a distance, looks like a skull.

    5
(The game is on.)

We’re more used to hearing Sherlock say “The game is on!”, but the original phrase used in The Adventure of the Abbey Grange is “The game is afoot!” It seems only fitting that the original is uttered by the detective in a Victorian setting.

    我们经常听到夏洛克说:“游戏已经开始了(The game is on)!”

(My Boswell)

“My Boswell is learning,” says Sherlock Holmes of John Watson, a reference to James Boswell, famously the biographer of Samuel Johnson.

    7
(The Hound Of The Baskervilles.)

On the mantelpiece is a statuette of a hound, a deliberate reference according to Mark Gatiss, to “the dog one,” aka The Hound Of The Baskervilles.

    8
    Criterion 餐厅 (Criterion Bar

Watson and Stamford drink in the Criterion Bar in A Study In Scarlet, the name partially obscured on the window behind them in The Abominable Bride. A poster advertising The London Fair can be seen behind Watson and Stamford. The same poster is later seen on the street where the bride performs her "suicide," despite several years having passed in the narrative of the episode.

    9
(When you have eliminated the impossible…)

(When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

Holmes actually says his catchphrase “elementary, my dear Watson,” which, as most Sherlock Holmes fans will very quickly (and hotly) attest, never appears in any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s writings.
