【小王子】The Little Prince (chapter1)
Once when I was a six-year-old boy, I saw a beautiful picture in a book. The book was called True Stories from Nature, and it was about the primitive forest(原始森林). It showed a picture of a boa constrictor(蟒蛇) swallowing an animal.

The picture was followed by this explanation: "Boa constrictor swallow their prey(猎物) in a single gulp（一口吃掉）. They don't even chew it. After finishing their meal, they are not able to move. They need a six-month's sleep for digestion."

I imagined the adventures（冒险） of the jungle. After some trials with a colored pencil, I succeeded in making my first drawing, My Drawing Number One. I showed my masterpiece(杰作) to the grown-ups.

"Are you frightened by my drawing?" I asked them.

"Frightened?" they answered. "Why should anyone be frightened by a mere hat?"

Actually, my drawing was not a picture of hat.It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting a huge elephant. But the grown-ups could not notice it. I made another drawing. I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that everyone could see it clearly. I always have to explain everything to them. That's why My Drawing Number Two was born.

This time, they understood what I had drawn, but their response was not the one that I had expected.

"Why don't you lay aside（把..放一边） your drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside?" they side. "What you need to do is devote yourself to（致力于） geography, history, arithmetic（算数） and grammar instead of making strange drawings like this."

As I think now, it was the exact moment that I gave up my dream of becoming a brilliant painter. I was only six years old at that time.
I was terribly disappointed at the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves. It is troublesome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.

So then I chose another job,and I learned to pilot（驾驶） airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world. It is true that my geographical knowledge has been very helpful to me. I can tell China from（两者中区分） Arizona at a glance. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is very useful.
In the course of my life. I have met many people who have been concerned with important matters. I have lived mainly among those grown-ups. I have seen them intimately（亲密的）, close at hand（近距离的；在眼前）, but that hasn't much changed my opinion of them.

Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me very wise, I tried the experiment of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always carried with me. I wanted to find out, if he truly understood the meaning of my drawing. However, whoever it was, he or she, would always say, "That is a hat, I'm sure."

Then I would give up talking to person about boa constrictors, or primitive forests, or stars. I would bring myself down(使降低) to his level and talk to him about bridge（桥牌）, and golf, and politics, and neckties. And the grown-ups would be greatly satisfied to have met such an intelligent man.
